“AS FASIONABLE AS BOSTON: THE SALISBURY MANSION FURNITURE FROMISAAC VOSE” - LECTURE BY FOREMOST FURNITURE EXPERT ROBERT MUSSEY

  • Museum of Worcester - Fletcher Auditorium 30 Elm Street Worcester, MA, 01609 United States (map)

Author, historian and furniture conservator Robert Mussey will join us from Boston to offer perspectives on the taste of Elizabeth Salisbury in his lecture “As Fashionable as Boston: The Salisburys’ Furniture from Isaac Vose.” This program is FREE and open to the public.

Robert has retired from a 40-year career as a furniture conservator. He was founder of the furniture conservation labs at Society of Preservation of New England Antiquities, now Historic New England, and for 9 years its head conservator. He is author of numerous scholarly articles on furniture conservation and history.

With her drawing rooms about to be completed, Elizabeth Salisbury sent her niece to the Vose shop to order a set of stylish chairs, sofas, card tables, sideboard, cellarette…and perhaps more inspired by similar Vose furniture in her brother’s Boston home. Upon her death in 1851, some of the furniture went to family members, other pieces to auction. Visit Salisbury Mansion Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 1 to 4PM to see the side chairs and a sofa from her original order.
