Salisbury Mansion
From correspondence and bills we know that Stephen and Elizabeth purchased much of their furniture in Boston, often relying on the advice of relatives who lived there. Among the largest purchases was a suite of furniture commissioned from Isaac Vose & Son in 1820 for the new drawing rooms. In widowhood, Madame Salisbury commissioned stylish furniture from William Hancock of Boston. She also asked her son to purchase lighting fixtures during his Grand Tour of Europe in 1829-1831 and, as a present, he sent her a diminutive French writing desk. Items currently in the house include some furnishings that have been documented to the family and others that are representative of what they owned, based on a partial inventory written at Madame Salisbury's death.
