On Sunday October 7th 1984, after a lengthy restoration, Worcester Historical Museum opened Salisbury Mansion to the public as the city's first historic house museum.

 

On December 19th 1955 at the invitation of Miss Forbes to her home at 23 Trowbridge Road in Worcester, a group of concerned citizens assembled to discuss the future of Salisbury Mansion. After considerable discussion on ways to preserve the mansion, a committee was formed and the name Salisbury Mansion Associates was adopted. Through the Associates early efforts, Salisbury Mansion was purchased and stabilized from structural weaknesses through their fundraising efforts. The Associates hosted meetings, exhibitions, and lectures at Salisbury Mansion during their ownership and through their dedication; Salisbury Mansion was documented and later registered on The National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

 

On November 16th 1905, Stephen Salisbury III died. The last of the Worcester Salisburys, his death signaled the end of a local dynasty. Through philanthropy, Stephen Salisbury III, gave time, money and land to many of Worcester's cultural institutions including American Antiquarian Society, Worcester Art Museum, and Worcester Historical Museum.
