The Cakemaker's Portrait

This late 1830s portrait of Hepsibeth Hemenway has been part of the Museum collection since 1895. While we know a good deal about the sitter, what can we uncover about the circumstances of the portrait?

Visit the newly installed Rice Gallery and learn about the artist community that developed in Worcester in the early 1800s and its relationship to the portrait of the celebrated cakemaker Hepsibeth Hemenway.

Love & Lace: The Valentines of Esther Howland

In 1847, Worcester resident Esther Howland received an English valentine inspiring her to design her own. She sold her cards through her father's stationery store. Business flourished, and after merging with Edward Taft in 1879, the business became the New England Valentine Company, one of the largest greeting card companies in the world.

Whispers in the Walls: Isaac Davis House

The first in a series, Whispers in the Walls looks to take the public behind the closed doors of some of Worcester's most historic and fascinating homes and discover the lives of people who inhabited them. Step back in time as we expose how they lived their private lives. A history of the house and the people who lived there will be given as you tour the building. At the end of the tour light refreshments will be served.

The first home we will open the doors to will be the Isaac Davis house, currently known as the Worcester Club at 1 Oak Street. The first tour will begin promptly at 1:00 pm with the second tour beginning promptly at 1:15 pm. Space is limited. So please register early. Call 508-753-8278 to reserve your spot.

Musicans of the Old Post Road Present: The Bohemians

The Old Post Road excursion will trace the musical migrations of several of the many composers from Bohemia who enlivened the cultural centers of Europe through their stylish compositions and virtuoso performances in the late eighteenth century. The program will include inventive quartets and trios by Dussek, Stamitz, Stepan, and Vanhal, along with an overture to an opera by Mozart premiered in Prague.

In partnership with Worcester Magazine, WHM takes a look at 30 objects, events, photos, new stories, or personalities that best represents Worcester's history through the lens of people ages 30-39 living and working in Worcester. Submissions were reviewed by a panel of curators and historians, with the final selections featured in the exhibit.

To enter your 30X30@30 submission, send your name, address, telephone, e-mail and date of birth to 30x30at30@worcesterhistory.net. Also answer these three following questions:
“What makes Worcester?” (200 words or less)
“What image or object best illustrates your submission?”
