Where have the looms gone?
Crompton & Knowles was the undisputed leading manufacturer of fancy looms in the world in the 1940s. But Swiss companies who began employing new technologies to make faster, more efficient looms soon challenged this dominance. Crompton & Knowles was slow to respond. When they did, it was too little too late. Why? The giant company had an enormous investment in the old technology. Also, its innovative spirit had withered. In 1980 the massive Crompton & Knowles factory works, a Worcester landmark since 1897, closed its antiquated plant and relocated in the south.
