Supplying
the Farms
Americans moved westward, carving farms out
of the vast continent and creating increased demands for the products of New
England's industries. Worcester companies made all kinds of farm implements
for the national marketplace. In the 1840s Ruggles,
Nourse & Mason, which rented space in the Court Mills at Lincoln
Square, made more plows than any other factory in the country. Their showrooms
and warehouse filled the entire second floor of Boston's Quincy Market. Ruggles,
Nourse & Mason also fostered the growth of other local industries, as they equipped
their factory with dozens of Worcester made machines.
